This biography of Hudson Taylor, the inland missionary to China, tells of the miraculous life of one man whose faith in God alone, brought the Gospel to China—a land that had never before heard of Jesus Christ.
Born in 1832, to God-fearing parents, James Hudson Taylor grew up in Barnsley, England. He was a frail child, who at the young age of five was moved by what he heard about the “darkness of heathen lands.” This book marks the milestones of his life. As a 17-year-old, he accepted Christ at the very moment his mother, who was miles away, was praying for him. As a young doctor’s apprentice earning meager wages he learned to share what little he had with the poor and to literally trust God for his own daily bread. All the challenges he encountered in his studies, prayer, work, and finances were met with increasing measures of self-discipline, a trait that would serve him well as he ministered in a land so very different from his own.
To more effectively reach the Chinese, Taylor endured the scorn of his Christian contemporaries by adopting the Chinese manner of dress. His willingness to shun the opinion of others allowed him unparalleled access to the homes and hearts of those he sought to serve. His was a life marked by intense hardship and heartache. However, even the death of three of his young children did not discourage his faithfulness to God’s call. This book explains how every challenge produced increased faith. With patient endurance, prayer, and trust, he waited upon God.
This deeply devout man brought the light of God’s spirit to a nation in darkness. He inspired many other missionaries to a life of service. His devotion to Christ and the life he lived resonate in his own words “It is possible to move man, through God, by prayer alone”.
Readers of The Spiritual Secret of Hudson Taylor take a personal journey with this missionary. They experience the heartfelt intimate moments between him and his God, during the most extraordinary circumstances of his life. God took a weak, humble, lonely man and through him brought the gospel of Jesus Christ to millions in China. Now Taylor’s story lives on, providing an amazing example of what God can do through a man willing to trust and obey. The book is full of dynamic accounts of God’s faithfulness—incidents that can and should motivate the reader to a closer walk with Christ.
