A Woman After God’s Own Heart

By Elizabeth George

Reviewed by Lisa Phillips

I just read A Woman After God’s Own Heart by Elizabeth George. I’m a major fiction fan, so it was tough at first to be faced with page after page of practical godly wisdom. But this book is a must-read for every married woman.

Once I got into it, it was so refreshing! God used this book’s look at my spiritual life, my family life, my priorities, and everything in-between, to draw me closer to Him in areas I was lacking. The simple guidance it gave me was crucial in seeing the value in implementing things like prayer and personal Bible study each day.

Elizabeth first looks at the pursuit of God, through devotion, the Word, prayer and obedience. She moves on to look at the pursuit of God’s priorities, an area that challenged me. Often as moms we feel like our children are our ministry. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing more amazing than nurturing little hearts to hunger after Jesus, but often we neglect a priority higher than this: our husbands. After God, our husband is our biggest priority—then our kids. My husband should be treated just like what he is—the king of my house. How convicting, but how blessed I am to realize this! Finally Elizabeth moves on to the area of practicing God’s Priorities. I love practical advice, and this last section is laced with wisdom from a Godly wife and mother who has changed so many lives by being a vessel of God in women’s ministry.

Each chapter ended with a Heart Response where I was called to be a ‘doer of the word, and not just a hearer only’ as it says in James. I would thoroughly recommend this book to any woman who, as I did (and still do), desires a closer relationship with God and His presence in her home and family life. Here’s one particular nugget I loved: ...every morning remember that your goal is simple: you want to have just one good day of living your priorities. Invaluable!
